8th January
Happy New year to you! Hope you enjoyed a restful break, no doubt a much quieter one than usual. We returned to work on Monday and reflected on the incredibly busy few days leading up to Christmas. Judging by the figures below, it's not surprising we found it busy...

The Numbers

  • In the week to 15/12/20, we supported 567 people, 268 children (47%).
  • In the week to 22/12/20, we supported 777 people, 373 children (48%).
  • In the week to 31/12/20, we supported 914 people, 486 children (53%).
  • In March 2020, the average number of people we were supporting was 225. In the last week before Christmas, we supported over x4 as many.

Don't Forget the App!

We regularly update our list of 'Wants and Needs' on our App and website.

Please click on the relevant Google Play or Apple Mac image if you've yet to download the App. In addition to listing our current needs, it also details where supermarket donation points are and allows you to make online financial donations too.

Wants and Needs

We will be concentrating on 3 key needs next week:

UHT milk, tinned meat pies, tinned fruit
However for the purpose of your street collection boxes, please see below a more generic list. You can click here for a word version. Bottles of olive oil are incredibly useful for recipe bags too - smaller 500ml bottles are preferable.

Lots of Recipes!

Towards the end of last year, I contacted clients who had received recipe bags. Of those that I spoke with, 71% had used their recipe bags and enjoyed cooking the dishes.

Spurred on with this, further recipe bags have gone out. This week, clients have received curried parsnip soup, carrot and coriander soup and potato and sprout hash. What a week! Thank you to Empower to Cook for the sprouts recipes, Tesco in Loudwater for lots and lots of surplus Christmas vegetables and to Peterley Manor Farm for their amazing Brussels still on their stalks!

Thank You

There are so many people that we could thank. Each and every one plays an important role in enabling us to support the people that we do. From amazing Janet Stewart who never fails to bring huge weekly donations from Seer Green to architect Jem Symondson who has made this wonderful weather proof 'drop zone' in Speen. We salute you!

There are many, many businesses and organisations that support us too. Account Technologies donated a whopping £6500 just before Christmas. When the boss offered to quadruple staff donations, perhaps he didn't think people would be so generous!
The Marlow Masonic Centre have also been incredibly supportive and managed to turn nearly £3000 worth of donations into about £6000 worth of food. Amazing!

It's unfortunately not possible to thank everyone on here so we at least try and acknowledge everyone's kindness and generosity on
Facebook. We do our best to not miss anyone because we genuinely value everyone's contribution no matter how small. When you only have a tin of food in the house to eat, another one makes a huge difference.

On the Hunt for a Van

In light of the amount of food we are moving, the time has come to invest in a van (and one that would fit a trestle table in the back). If you know anyone in the motor industry that may be able to help, please get in touch. We are also hoping to brand the vehicle so again, if you know of any sign writers, please let us know. Thank you.

MBRC Community Open Evening Tuesday 26 January

All are welcome to attend and the event will include a talk by Brian Jonson of Marlow Rotary Club, an ambassador club for End Plastic Soup project.
Picture
The End Plastic Soup campaign started in 2018 in the Rotary Clubs of Amsterdam and has spread to Rotary Clubs in other countries, including  the UK. In 2021 End Plastic Soup will become a Rotary Action Group making it truly International!

Brian’s talk starts with the massive pollution of the River Thames with plastic waste and micro-plastics, then looks at the global issue and considers how we can all act to END PLASTIC SOUP! Fitting in very well with the local community basis of Marlow Bridge Rotary Club, this will be our 4th project supporting the local environment.

We shall also be giving updates on all the various projects that Marlow Bridge Rotary Club runs and how you can join in to help...

As a big thank you from all Rotarians in Marlow for all that you have done to help us, the Rotary Club of Marlow Thames has arranged to give you the opportunity to celebrate Christmas after an incredibly challenging year. All free of charge!

The ingenious plan devised by Tom Kerridge and the Pub in the Park team, with support from Marlow Town Council means that Marlow may be the only town in Britain where the majority of the community will still have the opportunity to meet up for Christmas 🎄 🎄 🎄

This week-long community led festival will host a variety of events from 16th-22nd December, with the support of several local organisations, including our very own trip to see The Muppets Christmas Carol on Sunday 20 December – gates open at 10.30 for a 11.00 am start.

To obtain a pass for your car and its occupants, send an email providing your registration number, (plus driver's name and mobile number - this for Covid Track & Trace) to:

rotarydrivein@gmail.com

There is a limit of 100 cars!  Passes will be allocated on a first come first served basis. The festival is also being supported by Marlow Rugby Club, My Marlow and Marlow FM 🎅
